Indoor Hydroponic Garden week of 12-11

I finally harvested about a cereal bowl full of snap peas. The snap pea plants were seeded back on 10-9 I think, I would have to check with my first posts to verify that. I love how sweet the snap peas are but there are never enough of them and I eat them so fast. both plants are looking pretty brown now and not putting on new growth shoots at the ends so I think they may be done. I do see one plant has a new vine started from near the roots so I am going to try and prune away all the old plant and let that vine have all the plant energy and see if it will grow for another fruiting. The second plant is not looking so great but I will leave it in place and see if it starts another new vine too.  Continue reading

Building a Geodesic Dome Project – Handsaw and Chisel

With this post on Building a Geodesic Dome Greenhouse I will be demonstrating that power tools are not required so long as you have time and patience. This will be a somewhat new experience for me too, I have only seen what I am about to do done in video’s. As I have mentioned before, I am not a life long woodworker or carpenter but I can work with my hands (I am also not much of a writer). The tools that I will be using for this demonstration are a vice to hold the work piece, crosscut handsaw, a wood chisel to par away the last bits of unwanted wood and a sanding block to finish the surface to your liking. I will note here that I should have been using a larger chisel for this job. The wider faced chisel would have helped maintain a flatter plane over a larger area, I think.

I set the piece in my vice in such a way as to have one reference angle appear vertical to make cutting a little easier without the use of a blade brace. Take care with these cuts to not cut past the line from either the top angle where the teeth of the saw will be following nor the vertical line which you are following. The closer you can be to the line the less material you will have to par and sand away later. With a sturdy workbench to push against you can par with the chisel while the piece is in the vice. I tend to use a lighter workbench and will sit on my work piece as I par away material with the chisel. Check the working face for flatness and correct angle as you work and only remove small amounts of material as you go to prevent over cutting. The lines are a good reference point to work with to keep from cutting any of your overall length away as you remove any high points in the middle of the face but always check for the proper angles as you work. The only working length measurement we have to check against is the overall length from point to point. When the face appears smooth under the protractor for the 2 angles and the point angle is correct then I stop.

Using hand tools will take some time but is the least expensive means to accomplish the task at hand. Many of the tools used are probably already on hand and only one or two new tools will need to be purchased. By the time you finish all of the cuts on each end of every piece you will be very proficient with both the hand saw and wood chisel with increased speed and accuracy. You will also have the satisfaction of a job well done when finished and bragging rights for many long informative conversations for those who are interested in your new Geodesic Dome Greenhouse.

My next post will be using a 10″ table saw to demonstrate how to make these cuts a little faster. You can get the instructions for constructing a Geodesic Dome Greenhouse by following the link for The Eden Biodome Revolution here.

Building a Geodesic Dome Project – Lay out the cut

I am building a Geodesic Dome Greenhouse using plans that I purchased from The Eden Biodome Revolution. I am not following the directions directly as I write these blog posts. I am simply showing alternative ways to accomplish the same end result to help other “Do It Yourself” folks like me can know that this project is very doable with simple tools. I am not a big woodworker and have never been a construction worker, I am a mechanic and computer repair technician if anything. I would rather weld a Geodesic Dome together than cut one from wood but if I can do it then anyone can. Continue reading

Building a Geodesic Dome Project – Introduction

I bought the E-Book “The Eden Biodome Revolution” looking for the best instructions for building a Geodesic Dome Greenhouse. Don’t get me wrong, I found several websites that are free and very confusing that try to explain how to make a hub that would do the job but a hub is expensive, time consuming and not the strongest connection for the effort. I wanted something simple and easily accomplished using tools and materials already on hand or cheaply acquired. The Eden Biodome Revolution provided the key that I needed to accomplish my goal of building a Geodesic Dome Greenhouse. I had no luck finding salvage or scrap 2×4′s fast enough for my current excitement level so I purchased new stud lumber for about $2 per board. My first project will be an 8′ dome for the kids to play under like a covered fort. This will keep the 5 year old happy for years and I will get to see just how rugged these Geodesic Domes really are. Continue reading

Indoor Hydroponic Garden week of 11-14-11

Flowers have started to pop out on my snap peas and the red bell peppers are growing strong. The cherry tomato’s are not doing so well today. I need to increase the water volume so I can stabilize the PH. I have not adjusted the PH but it is very low right now and that is not good. I know that the more water that I have in the system the more stable the PH will be. I was not planning on increasing the water volume do to the fact that I was in need of moving the whole system to another location in the basement but that plan has been postponed indefinitely so I will add at least 30 gallons to the system today. I may go ahead with my plans to make this an Aquaponics system at the same time and set up the fish tank which will add another 20 gallons for about a 50 gallon total. I will be able to easily add the second grow bed once the fish have settled into the system.

If you are looking for more information on how you too can have an Indoor Hydroponic Garden for your survival you will find all the information that you need in these e-books.

Indoor Hydroponics — Grow Log Update 11-3-11

Its been 3 weeks since I sowed the seed for my Indoor Hydroponic Garden. I will add pics that I took today of my Indoor Hydroponic Garden to the end of this post. The snap peas are growing fast with the cherry tomato’s putting in an impressive growth spurt also. The red bell peppers are seed from store bought peppers so I do not know what will become of them. They might be hybrids that will not make fruit that looks anything like what we bought, I need to buy some Heirloom red bell pepper seed for the next time that I want to grow them. This is the first time the snap peas have germinated and I am excited to see them but I am unsure of their outcome at this time. Snap peas add nitrate to the soil and I am growing in an Aquaponics environment in preparation to adding fish soon. Aquaponics is a high nitrate environment naturally and may inhibit flowering and fruit set. We will just have to see how it goes. I have had success in the past with Aquaponics growing heirloom tomato’s so I am sure the other 3 types of plants will do just fine and I will see fruit form in another month. Thanks Giving will be an interesting time this year, I will know positively if the snap peas will produce in Aquaponics or not and the cherry tomato’s should have flowers and some fruit setting.

Time to plant again — Indoor Hydroponics

It’s that time again. Not that I had a reason not to plant my Hydroponic System before now but life required more of my efforts so the Hydroponic System has been sitting idle for far too long. I cleaned the hydroton pebbles as best as I could and put a make shift reservoir together for now. A little Urea to get the system started and later, when its calmed down a bit and stabilized, I will add goldfish (Aquaponics) when the plants are mature enough to clean the water. I like the results from my first Aquponics System that I, sadly, don’t have any information or pics from. I will add pics later, maybe in a gallery or something. Not sure how I want to do that yet but I will include a few Youtube videos explaining the construction of my system. I built my systems from scratch and always have. I have instructions on how to build a couple of containers but I never got around to writing instructions for the type of system I have now. Continue reading
